Let me start this out by saying that we try our very best to provide an excellent surf vacation for everyone and we are constantly working to improve the service, the equipment and the facilities of the surf camp. People that came to the surf camp during our first few years and then came back again are totally amazed at the improvements we have made over the years. This is the reason that 95% of the people loved their vacation at the surf camp and many have returned again and again.

Unfortunately, 5% of the people are unhappy at the surf camp. Some perhaps, thought they were going to a “Club Med” type of a location. They didn’t really want a rustic surf camp in a remote and unspoiled location. Most of these 5% tell me to contact them when I have the swim up bar, disco, etc., and they will come back. Sorry, but that isn’t going to happen. We like it pristine and beautiful. Maybe Acapulco or Waikiki would be a better choice for them.

Below, I am going to share some emails that I have received from my customers over the years. I am sharing these because you will see Morro Negrito is a place that many people loved and enjoyed:

FEBRUARY 2010 BILLY BALDWIN’S TRIP TO MORRO NEGRITO

 http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?pid=1036887&id=1358867671&ref=mf

Another incredible trip to Morro Negrito! As usual, the trip went off without a hitch. David was waiting for us at the airport. He was nice enough to take us around to buy snacks, liquor, pillows, towels, surf wax and then to lunch. He put us on the bus to Guavala and we were on our way. The bus ride, 5 hours, was comfortable and it was nice to see the country side during the day. Cheffy was waiting patiently at the bus stop in Guavala and took us to the camp bunk house for a good night sleep. The trip to the island is tide dependent, so we had to wait until 6am to get out. We were happy to get a good night sleep and were rested for the morning surf session. Rocky, guide, woke us up and put us on the boat to the island. The boat ride out in the morning is pretty unbelievable! Paul, guide, met us at the beach to help us bring in the gear. The camp had a few new buildings and decks since my last trip. A great deck off of the central white house, a new two bedroom house to the left, yoga cabana, wind power, and new dining area. The guides, Rocky, Paul and Gillian, were awesome! They took care of all of our needs and were ready to do whatever we wanted at the drop of a hat. The surf during our stay was smaller, but we anticipated this. It is the slow season for waves. It picks up in March. This gave us the opportunity to explore the fishing and diving around camp. They have a great new fishing boat with twin 115 yamaha's. We did some awesome diving, spearfishing and fishing around the island, the rivers and "offshore". We caught wahoo, tuna, skip jacks, sierra mackerel, jacks, needlefish, african pompano, grouper, snapper and langostas. We also hiked through the jungle and went for a nice evening at Narris's local bar. If the waves are small, don't worry, there is more than enough to do until the swell picks up!!

The guides are ever changing. I have yet to meet one I didn't like, but if you have the opportunity to head down in the near future, Rocky and Paul will make your trip one to remember!

The food by the local ladies, Narris & Chilla, is awesome. The plates will stuff you. I am 6'1", 200lbs and love to eat. I was happy with every meal. Breakfast from eggs, pancakes, french toast, bread, rolls, fresh fruit (everyday), oatmeal and the list goes on. Lunch was multiple styles of fish, chicken, beef, rice, potatoes, cabbage, pasta, tacos, beans and local vegetables. Dinner was similar to lunch with pasta with meat and veges, rice dishes, beans, fresh veges, fish, beef, chicken, etc. If you catch fish, they will prepare it! We had wahoo & tuna sushi for appetizer and ceviche most days. I had a few fresh langosta's for lunch. Chilla's ceviche is top notch!! Make sure you troll from breaks to port, you will be happy you took home a few sierra's! If you want a lot of beer and soft drinks, let the guides know this in advance so they can prepare for your arrival. If you plan on drinking liquor, bring as much as you possibly can with you. If you have some left over, the next crowd will drink it or buy it from you.

The camp, just like everything in life, is about expectations. If you are a 4+ star vacationer, this probably isn't going to meet your expectations. It takes a good while to get to camp via bus & boat, your arrival is tide dependent, you are riding in panga's not $40+K boats, you are sleeping in concrete & tile houses with twin beds and foam mattresses with mosquito nets, the fans keep you cool not air conditioning, you eat family style with the whole camp, drinks are in a cooler and you mark them by honor, food is as good as it gets, but isn't prepared by seasoned chefs from your local culinary school, if others are there you decide as a group what you are going to do with the boats, the guides administer first aid if needed, not the local clinic, etc. All of the above is why I chose to go to Morro Negrito. You can't beat the price, the remote location, the local people, guides, great surf, diving and fishing. Taking the journey to the island, for me, has been worth it every time! I think a lot of the negative reviews seem to be posted by people who didn't do their research before heading down.

Do yourself a favor before you go, ask Steve questions and ask for the current camp guides email addresses. The guides are the ones who are there everyday. They can let you know exactly what the tides are doing, what the surf has been, how the fishing has been, and the final details for your arrival. They do have wireless on the island! The guides will respond when the internet is up and the guests give them a little time during their day. It runs for maybe an hour or so each day when needed. It draws a decent amount of the electricity and electricity is solar and wind generated with a back up generator. You are on vacation, don't tie yourself to your computer!

You can pay for everything via PayPal, so you only need to carry enough cash for tips, snacks along the way, etc. Don't forget that these guides and local cooks, cleaners & captains do a lot to make your trip a success. Remember that when you leave and tip accordingly. The local kids love gifts and you might find that the extra hat, snacks, rod, lures, towels or pair of sunglasses your brought might really help out one of the locals.

If you like what you have read above, Morro Negrito should be on your list of places to visit! You will not be disappointed! It is impossible, at least in my travels, to find a better price for the amount of surf, fishing, diving, scenery, people, culture, food and overall fun you will have at Morro Negrito and during your travels to and from!

Let me start this out by saying that we try our very best to provide an excellent surf vacation for everyone and we are constantly working to improve the service, the equipment and the facilities of the surf camp. Subject: Our stay at Morro Negrito

Steve,

Mac, Paul, Marc, Jason & I (Max) had a terrific time at the camp.  All in all our trip to Morro Negrito was a 10!!!  There isn't a thing we would change about it.  Jeff, Heather, Rob, Alex, the great cooks and the boat drivers took great care of us during our stay.  What a truly stellar group of people.  We feel very fortunate to have been there during a swell.  It started small our first day, Monday July 3rd and built to nearly double overhead at P-Land by the end of our week.  We highly recommend Morro Negrito to any surfer with a decent attitude.  We will definitely be back again for more!!!

Attached are photos from our trip.  I am emailing the smaller file size so as not to blow up your computer.  If you would like the larger file size photos please let me know which ones.  More photos coming in following emails.

Thank you very, very much!

hello Steve!

thank you so much for for our stay in your camp. We had the best of times and found the best job in the world!!!!

sorry I haven't written to you before, but after I came home I have been lagging a little after in school, to put it mildly.

Had my first exam today and I'm having a little quiet time before starting again tomorrow.

The location of that camp is the best I've ever seen!!!

Meeting the local kids and families living on the island totally secluded from the western way of living was the best part of our trip. Working with Jeff was a pleasure and I have to say he is more than a surfguide for the camp....

Say hello to Marilyn as well from both hermine and me. It was cool to see when she entered the camp and the attitudechange among the workers, and thank her for her dinners!

Say hello to everyone down there and again thank you so much!

Hopefully we can come back soon and pick up our old duties as surfguides!

I don't know what I liked the best surfwise but Sandbar, P-land  and Nestles blew my mind and I have some pictures in my mind of walking through the jungle out on silva and looking out on nestles through the palmtrees. they won't fade!

you really are a lucky couple!!!!

hope to see you again, the sooner the better!

best regards

Hello Steve & Marilyn,

I had an incredible time.  The camp location is a special place as we surfed 16 sessions in 9 days.  I think your team does a fantastic job of providing surfers with great meals and surf services as I would recommend your camp to other traveling surfers.  Thanks for a fantastic time as I hope to return someday.

Steve,

I wanted to thank you for everything while we were down at camp!  We had a blast!  It was everything we wanted and more!!  The worst part of going to camp was leaving.  It has made for a hard return back to “the real world” of computers, cell phones, work, etc.  I have read a few of the negative remarks that have been made by others and can’t understand where this comes from.  Every moment, from the pick up at the “marina” to the last ride back to shore was great.  We had overhead surf at P-Land, Sandbar, and Nestles.  The last morning at Sandbar was a day to remember!  Crystal clear water with a slow to nonexistent tide, head high+ surf and shoulders that just kept going!

The cooks were awesome!  We had great, healthy and filling meals every morning, afternoon, and night.  The cooks were very nice and prepared our freshly caught tuna and fish to perfection.  The yellowfin tuna sashimi was terrific!

Lodging was even better than we anticipated.  We loved the White House and enjoy our evenings on the porch and down at the new kitchen.  The new kitchen is a terrific addition!

The fishing was amazing.  In one morning (3hrs) we caught a 35-40lb Wahoo, 25lb Dorado, 3 yellowfin tuna, 4 black tuna, and a few other fish I had never seen before like spearfish (natives had a different name for them).  I think we caught a fish every twenty minutes!  It was the most beautiful scenery I had ever fished around!  I will be back for sure!!

We are still editing our DVD and will get you a copy soon.  I also wanted to see how the guys were doing spearfishing

Thanks again,

Sorry to take so long to drop you a line, but I am having trouble getting back up to speed here in the states!

To say the lease, Panama was an incredible experience and is a rare find in our cookie cutter over-commercialized western world.  Jeff was a real trooper and we all had much respect and appreciation for him and his great attitude.  I hope you know what an asset he is to the camp.  While we really only had two great days of surf, the boys all enjoyed the downtime and endless mangos & coconuts.  The food was great and healthy, we all enjoyed the fresh fare.  The lodgings were great and better than we expected, the afternoon rain and wind were always welcomed in the big house.  The rest of the staff, Antonio, your wife & the others were all very helpful as well.

The remote location and what you have accomplished is amazing....Koudos to you and your family for all the hard work that enabled us to enjoy our travel adventure.  I feel sorry for anyone who has a problem with a REAL surf adventure experience, I would highly recommend your Panama home/surf camp.

Thanks for the great experience,

james

Hi, Steve:

Thanks for the e-mail, I apreciate to have info from your camp - I spent one
week there in May2001 and was one of my best trips ever with a consistent
"La Punta" swell all the days from 3 to 6-7 feet. It was an
all-spanish-bodyboarders trip, sponsored by REEF-Quiksilver, with 2
photographers on the "panga" boat and another on the water.

If I have time (and money) enough, I still have in my mind your camp as one
of my favourite "targets".
Please, give me your professional e-mail in order to ask you for prices and
reservations if I have the time/money to go with some friends.

Is it: surfgun1@yahoo.com ??

I enclose some shots from "La Punta": that´s me in one of my best tubes in
the trip. They were published in spanish magazines Tres60 and SurferRule,
french SurfSession, portuguese Vert and U.K. ThreeSixty.

I can't believe that two months have gone by since I was down in Panama.  What a great trip!  We've been riding a few good Nor'easters up here.  Thanks for sending the pics and vids links from the Sept 28th trip.  Were there any of the same generated from the Sept 21st group.  I remember that Jake and Mike had videos rolling, and you had some great pics too!

Hey Steve, I just wanted to say thank you for the week in paradise! I had a great time surfing P-land's crystal clear big ole lefts. The Island was really relaxing and everything that was supposed to happen did smoothly. Not to mention the small crew of wave riders from all around who were really good guys.Congratulations you run a great surf camp and now all my friends want to go. I loved the undeveloped aspect of Panama and think it's an awesome country, "Cowboy Country". Take it easy and have fun down there at Morro Negrito! Later, Hank Draper.

Steve,

Just to let you know that my group had a thoroughly enjoyable trip to Morro Negrito.

While the surf was not exactly pumping while we were there, it was perfect for our group.  Everybody without exception had a great time.  One of our guys, Mike Part is making a little film about the trip and a website.  We have many pictures of Phil, who was with the other group on the island at the same time as us.  We took a lot of pictures of Phil and his group and we want to email them to him.  Could you please send me his email address?

We thought Jay did an excellent job as a surf guide, and handled the emergency with Jason extremely well.  You have a gem in that young man and I hope he will stay on as a surf guide for some time.

Next time, I will probably come alone or with one friend, and I will not bring a board.  Your ten foot noserider was fine for an old dog like me.  the hotel Marbella at $44 a night was an excellent hotel.  Very clean with good beds, in a good part of town.  You may want to recommend it for other groups  who may want something a little more upscale and without the hookers!

Take care, and please keep us posted on all the goings on at Morro Negrito.

Thanks again for a great reunion surf trip.

Hello, Steve!

I never got a chance to write you back after our trip.

I just wanted to drop you a quick e-mail thanking you for accepting us at the camp even though it was already full. We all appreciated that.

I'm really busy down here but we, the brazilians, all want to make a conference call with you to thank you.
As you know, Jay and I were have ocean (it's 1 hour from the closest beach).

So, a lot of people saw our pictures and everybody wants to go to that dream place called Morro Negrito. I'm just glad that I've been there while it is an uncrowded surf spot. I'm afraid it will get crowded someday if other surf camps are built in that area.

I wish you great luck in this business of realizing surfers' dreams...

Regards, my friend!

Steve --

I want you to know that my kids and I had one of the most incredible
adventures of our lives in your surf camp.  Although the surf wasn't huge,
it was big enough for us 15 old-time long boarders.  The food was some of
the best I've had anywhere and being up against the jungle with the rain and
surf lulling us to sleep at night is a memory I'll never forget.

The kids had a great time surfing (my 9-year-old son outsurfed me!) and
snorkling and hiking.  The 2 mile beach is my new favorite place in the
world and I look forward to seeing it again in the coming years.

Nice job.  Everything was well-organized and we were very happy with the
experience.

Here's a group shot of us.  Talk to you soon.  Keep up the great work.

Mike

Steve I have just returned from your camp.  I just wanted to tell you that everything was great.  The logistics were worked out really well and our travel was flawless.  The waves were great and the food was excellent.

I had a blast I would go back again if I knew that the lineups may be less crowded, and the surf guides would help instead of only think about there wave count..

Thanks again for a great trip your hard work was much appreciated by everyone there and most of us had experiences that will last a life time with countless stories to tell our friends.

Steve

The trip was great! We had good to excellent waves at Sand Bar the first
three days, tapering off to poor-but-still-fun the last two days. Silva
breaks were sketchy, being overhead at the beginning but, from all accounts,
not ideal due to wind and swell direction.
The camp is terrific! Quiet, comfortable. Landscaping really nice. Food was
excellent: Chela is magic and kept us full and happy. Ben did the guide job
competantly and was delightful besides. John (interesting, engaging
character to be sure), was extremely helpful at all times. He repaired a
couple boards too.
Boatmen Aris and Johanes were excellent, no problems there.
Finally, I was impressed with the Panama City arrangements; pickups were
trouble-free, transport comfortable, Hotel Marparaiso just fine. We did get
to the landing a bit late for the tide due to a small delay in departing
Panama City. I would recommend erring on the conservative side to ensure
arrival while tide is good and high! Lugging the boards through the mud was
dicey.

I'll be writing a little story for my surf club newsletter in which I will
definitely recommend Morro Negrito. I'll pass it on to you.

Steve, this is Eric Petrone, from team "Real Siked (NY)" i was just
checking the forecast on surfline.com for waves here on long island and i
was stoked to see a link to your new and improved website. Obviously i was
extremely siked to see that you chose the picture of me and my boys pulling
in those mackerel this past january, to be one of the pictures on the site.
In light of the recent events here in the NYC area the mood is somewhat
somber and reflective. On the morning of the 11th James tallarico and i were
surfing by far the best waves we have caught since p land on jan. 1st. it
was head and a half at robert moses state park here on long island.  after
about 3 hours of epic waves another surfer paddled out and  told us the
news, at first we thought he was just trying to get us out of the water.
Prob the best waves i had ever seen, on the worst day in NYC's history, it
was kind of bizarre.
Anyway i just felt like getting in touch with you to let you know that
morro negrito was on my mind. Thanks stevo- Eric Petrone-

Steve,
I too would like to thank you for the great time that we had down in Panama.
My brothers and I enjoyed the surf as well as the people.  Jeff was a great
guide who put his whole heart into everything that he did and really seemed
to enjoy being in Panama.  It was fun to see and surf with some of the
locals(Eric, and Fernando).  It seemed like there was not one day that we did
not have surf.  And it was nice to see emilys breaking, and glassy!  Anyway
we had a blast and would recommend the camp to anyone wanting to surf
Panama.  Steve I would also like to see if you could send me some of the
video footage that you took of our week down in Morro Negrito, I know that
you have some from one day on Silva from the beach I think that it was on
Monday or Tuesday.  Anyway it was around the 13th of April.  If you could
send it to

I can pay you for any costs that might occur.
Thanks again, you were a very gracious host.

Hello!  Well, we returned from the jungle unscathed.  I really enjoyed the  trip.  The land is beautiful and we caught some great surf.  The two guides, Walter and Ben, really knew the area well...especially Walter.  You really hired people who care about your guests.  I was amazed by his positive attitude!  Even after 3 months of living in the jungle, with the typical inconveniences it offers, Walter was absolutely thrilled to march water up a hill or roll a huge boat down the beach.  He enthusiastically called this physical labor, "a game".  We were all very sad when they left, especially since our incoming guide knew the place as well as we did.  Maricio was as accomodating as possible and a nice person to hang with as well.   Thank you again for the opportunity to stay at Morro Negrito.  It is a very special place.

God Bless,

I went to your camp  October 15, with Mike MacKracken and had a great time.
I met you just as you were returning to the mainland .  I was the one with
all the questions about camera film etc.  Yea,  I got some good shots and
I'll try to send them to you later.  Jay was great!!!  I think he said he had
some type of environment degree.  He was friendly, and we (surfers) we always
his main concern.  He would explain the hazards of the different breaks,
where to take off etc.  He was always the last person out of the boat. I enjoyed

meeting your father in law. We bought
some hats from Ceasor.  I might a suggestion.  One the hat it has your surf
camp name,  also print Panama .  Also Ceasor had a neat surf decal on his
van.  Can I buy some from you?  Steve, thanks for everything, had the most
restful vacation of my life.

Hi Steve,

I'm finally getting around to thanking you for the fun time we had at

your surf camp. Having a boat to move between the different breaks in

the area was great. The expert knowledge of the breaks and interaction

with tide conditions by our guide Nick was invaluable. Based our

understanding of things we decided to make our trip during a time when

in was likely to be as small as the surf gets at the camp. Things were

exactly as you (Steve) described them. For others that might read this,

small at this camp means fun overhead waves at the river mouth break on

the big island and at the same time the small island had bigger,

significantly overhead waves that were thicker, faster and steeper than =
the wave I ride back home. There was enough power there to break one =
board in half. The timing of the meals was great - there was no waiting =
around and the quality was good. The people that run the camp and the =
other 2 guests during our stay were all friendly and it was good to get =
to know them. The long stretch of wide sandy beach at low tide on the =
big island is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. The night =
sky was amazing and the fireflies were cool. Overall I highly recommend =
your camp to others and I hope to return someday.

Hey Steve, just wanted to drop you a line and tell you what a great =
time Bebe and I had in Panama! I was a little worried at first that Bebe =
may not be comfortable, but she had a blast and wants to return ! Nick =
did a great job of taking care of us and was really dialed in on all the =
surf breaks! You are very lucky to have him working for you! I guess =
things are smoothing out with the purchase of your new boat and car! I =
know Nick was really looking forward to that new boat! I don't know my =
schedule, but it we would like to return, maybe withing the next couple =
of months if we can! Take care and good luck with everything!

Steve

sorry you've been getting a million emails from our group. obviously we had a good time!

We'd LOVE to send you some pics to put on the website; we're all looking for our 15 minutes of fame.

The surf was epic, the whole thing a real memorable experience. I now appreciate the logistics you have to deal with, and I'm impressed you pull it off.

If you are interested, I would like to give you some feedback on the things I though made the camp good, as well as some things to consider to make it all time.

Until next time.

Pete

Hi Steve! I just returned from the camp.. .my only comment.... woooow... I was so impressed. It was beautiful, one of the most beautiful places I have seen... Just two days and so many adventures... I even got to see some fishing.. we saw dolphins from the distance.. its great to sleep with the sound of the waves... well, just to congratulate you for this big idea.. and I am sure that the people that live there, appreciate your effort... you know I am panamanian and there is so many poor people over there... I always have things like clothes or books that I can donate... and even food for cats or dogs...

I dont know if its going to be a problem, but I would like to meet you here in Panama city before you go to the camp and give you my small donation for the school, Ive got things like chalk, pencils and paper.

Well, have a nice flight to Panama!

Jimena
